Express Entry Immigration System

Express Entry is Canada’s flagship application management system for key economic immigration programs. It uses a points-based system called the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) to rank candidates and invite the highest-scoring individuals to apply for permanent residence.

Programs Under Express Entry

1. Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)

For skilled workers with foreign work experience who want to immigrate to Canada permanently.

Minimum Requirements:

At least one year of continuous full-time (or equivalent part-time) skilled work experience
Language proficiency (CLB 7 in English or French)
Canadian educational credential OR completed foreign credential with ECA
Proof of funds (unless you have valid job offer or are currently working in Canada)

2. Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

For skilled workers who have Canadian work experience and want to become permanent residents.

Minimum Requirements:

At least one year of skilled work experience in Canada within the last 3 years
Language proficiency (CLB 7 for NOC 0 or A jobs, CLB 5 for NOC B jobs)
No education requirement (but points awarded for education)
No proof of funds required

3. Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)

For skilled workers qualified in a skilled trade who want to become permanent residents.

Minimum Requirements:

At least 2 years of full-time work experience in a skilled trade within the last 5 years
Language proficiency (CLB 5 for speaking/listening, CLB 4 for reading/writing)
Valid job offer of full-time employment for at least 1 year OR certificate of qualification

How Express Entry Works

Step 1: Check Your Eligibility

Determine which program(s) you qualify for based on your work experience, education, language skills, and other factors.

Step 2: Calculate Your CRS Score

The Comprehensive Ranking System awards points for:

Core/Human Capital Factors (Age, Education, Language, Work Experience) - up to 500 points
Spouse/Partner Factors - up to 40 points
Skill Transferability - up to 100 points
Additional Points (Provincial nomination, Job offer, Canadian education, French skills, Sibling in Canada) - up to 600 points

Step 3: Prepare Your Documents

Passport or travel document
Language test results (IELTS, CELPIP, or TEF)
Educational Credential Assessment (ECA)
Proof of work experience (reference letters, employment contracts)
Proof of funds (bank statements)
Police certificates
Medical examination results
Photos

Step 4: Create Your Express Entry Profile

Submit your profile online to enter the pool of candidates. Your profile will be valid for 12 months.

Step 5: Receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA)

IRCC conducts regular draws (typically every 2 weeks) and invites candidates with the highest CRS scores to apply for permanent residence.

Step 6: Submit Your Application

You have 60 days to submit a complete application after receiving an ITA.

CRS cut-off scores vary with each draw. Factors affecting the cut-off include:

Number of candidates in the pool
Frequency of draws
Category-based selection draws
Provincial nominee draws

Category-Based Selection

IRCC now conducts category-based rounds of invitations for candidates with:

French-language proficiency
Work experience in healthcare occupations
Work experience in STEM occupations
Work experience in trade occupations
Work experience in transport occupations
Work experience in agriculture and agri-food occupations
