Study Permit Requirements
To study in Canada, you generally need a study permit. Requirements include:
1. Letter of Acceptance
From a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada.
2. Proof of Financial Support
You must prove you can cover:
- Tuition fees for your first year
- Living expenses for yourself and accompanying family members
- Return transportation
Minimum Funds Required (2024):
- Single student: $20,635 CAD per year (outside Quebec)
- Additional funds required for family members
3. Clean Record
- No criminal record (police certificate may be required)
- Not be a risk to Canadian security
4. Medical Examination
Required if you plan to:
- Study for more than 6 months
- Work in health care or with children
- Have lived in certain countries
5. Intent to Leave Canada
You must satisfy the immigration officer that you will leave Canada when your studies are complete (though you may apply to stay permanently).
Study Permit Application Process
Step 1: Choose Your Program and Institution
Select a program and apply to a Designated Learning Institution (DLI).
Step 2: Receive Letter of Acceptance
Obtain an official letter of acceptance from the DLI.
Step 3: Gather Documents
- Passport
- Letter of acceptance
- Proof of financial support (bank statements, scholarship letters, GIC)
- Immigration Medical Examination (IME) results (if required)
- Statement of purpose
- Academic documents (transcripts, diplomas)
- Language test results (IELTS/TOEFL - if required by institution)
Step 4: Apply Online
Submit your study permit application through the IRCC portal.
Step 5: Biometrics
Provide fingerprints and photo at a Visa Application Centre.
Step 6: Decision
Wait for processing and decision.
Student Direct Stream (SDS)
Students from certain countries can apply through the Student Direct Stream for faster processing (approximately 20 calendar days):

SDS Requirements:
- Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) of $20,635 CAD
- Upfront medical exam
- IELTS score of 6.0 or higher in each band (or TEF for French)
- Copy of acceptance letter from DLI
- Proof of full payment of first-year tuition
Working While Studying
With a study permit, you can:
- Work up to 20 hours per week during regular academic sessions
- Work full-time during scheduled breaks (winter/summer holidays)
- Work on-campus or off-campus
Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)
After completing your studies, you may be eligible for a PGWP:

PGWP Requirements:
- Completed full-time study at a DLI

- Canadian work experience (from PGWP) counts for CEC
